Transportation

With Charlotte’s population projected to grow from 1.6 million to 4.3 million by 2027, a comprehensive transit system is essential to maintaining our quality of life. Our city has an opportunity to become a leader in transportation amongst New South cities. As we complete the first phase of the light rail system, we must continue to improve our roads and bus system.  Reducing congestion and preparing for our future needs can be accomplished with sound planning and a clear action plan addressing citizens concerns.

Public Safety

Without a public that feels safe, our options for a bright future are limited.  In a recent police ride along I completed with a CMPD officer, I learned first hand that our crime problems are complex and can not be solved with a single solution.

Our policing efforts must focus on a few important areas:

  • Aggressive and targeted enforcement in our high crime areas.
  • Increased support for collaborative prevention/intervention programs with neighborhoods, schools, & churches to stop our youth from pursuing the dead end path of joining a gang.   An excellent example of this work in action can be found in the Steele Creek Youth Network (formerly known as God & Gangs)
  • Increased involvement with citizens & businesses in crime prevention initiatives.
  • Continued integration of technology to prevent and deter criminal activity.

I whole heartedly support the men and women of our police, fire, and EMS divisions. These professionals must be well equipped and ready to protect our citizens.

Economic Development

Charlotte must remain a business-friendly community where our economy continues to be green & growing!  We can not take for granted our past economic success. We must support initiatives that focus on keeping jobs and the tax base in Charlotte.  We have to remain vigilant in providing the infrastructure necessary to support a skilled and competitive workforce where businesses of all sizes will look to locate and remain in this great city.

Transit Tax

Again, I believe a comprehensive transit system is essential to our future.  I support the proposed tax because it supports a public transportation system that will be paid by ALL that live, work & visit our city.  It’s needed to pay for obligations we’ve already incurred and to fund our future growth needs. Without the tax, property owners are likely to bear the burden. Even renters would be affected because landlords will respond with rent increases.

Environment

I believe a great city is one that is clean, presentable, and respects its environment.  Our city must always look to improve in our efforts to conserve energy & recycle. Charlotte must be proactive in addressing and improving the borderline air quality standards we currently maintain.  We must also address future water supply shortages that are predicted with our growth.  Both of these matters threaten our economic vitality and warrant planning and attention.

Diversity

I believe our city will meet the challenges we face as we grow and become more diverse as a community. Already, Charlotte is known as a genuinely friendly city.  However, to remain friendly we must continue to embrace ALL that call Charlotte home and recognize that with diversity comes strength.

Public Service

Charlotte has enjoyed a tradition of “good government”.  Our city has benefited greatly by civic minded men and women with vision who’ve stepped up and made a difference.  . I hope to follow in this tradition and be a public servant willing to take action to continue to make our community a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
